USA ambassador to Zimbabwe defies Trump

Harare – The Ambassador of United States of America to Zimbabwe Harry Keels Thomas Jr said that his government has tremendous respect for Africa, despite the fact that President Donald Trump highlighted African countries as “Shitholes” last week.

Addressing participants at the Global Grants Fund launch at the Harare International Conference Centre on Wednesday Ambassador Harry said “On behalf of our Embassy, my Government and the American people, we have tremendous respect for Zimbabwe, the African Continent its people its culture and its tradition..”

The move by the US government to be apologetic and strengthen relations with Africa comes after the African Union envoy issued a statement saying “….is extremely appalled at, and strongly condemns the outrageous, racist and xenophobic remarks attributed to the President of the United States of America”.

The Zimbabwe Foreign Affairs office also issued a statement saying “We join fellow African countries and others in rejecting this unfortunate characterization of our people and countries. We all desire the amplification of positive relations with the USA, and would hope that care will be taken going forward to avoid jeopardizing prospects for those relations through such hurtful and prejudicial language from any official quarter in the USA.”

President Trump on Friday denied describing certain nations in such vulgar terms, tweeting: “The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used.” He also defended himself Sunday night, telling reporters that he is “not a racist.”

The Ambassador said Zimbabweans in United States of America are the most achieving people and that his government is welcome to receive more Zimbabweans in their country.

He also said that despite anything the United States remains part of Zimbabwe and the Global Community “The immigrants to America from Africa particularly from Zimbabwe are among the highest achieving people and we just want to say from the bottom of our hearts we are part of you, we are part of the global community we have nothing to disregard on you,………. visitors to America are welcome”.
